A FALL PIANO COURSE Hosted By Ruggero Piano

Finding The Emotional Rhythm

Teaching students to perform with physical freedom and unique expressiveness.

Intrigued by the writings of pedagogue Abby Whiteside, Dr. Barry studied extensively with the late pianist Sophia Rosoff. Rosoff was one of the last surviving students of Whiteside. Based on her Doctoral research project, Dr. Barry presents the essentials of playing with emotional rhythm. The basis of Whiteside and Rosoffs teachings, “emotional rhythm” can be found through freedom of the entire body when playing, and “outlining,” a crucial practicing technique. The beauty of Whiteside’s pedagogical discoveries and direct approach to the performance of any instrument is that fundamental concepts can be taught from the very first lesson and continue through the artist level with increasingly sophisticated practice strategies.

Each lecture will include a power point presentation and handouts for studio use. The workshops are designed to encourage an in-depth knowledge of Emotional Rhythm.
