Special Concert: An Evening in Vienna With Acclaimed Virtuoso Jan Jiracek von Arnim @ Ruggero Piano

RALEIGH, N.C. (September 17, 2018) — Ruggero Piano will host “A Night in Vienna,” a unique and tasteful blend of classical music and conversation to be held on September 17, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

This first-time event will feature international concert pianist Jan Jiracek von Arnim, who is touring the United States this September on behalf of Ruggero Piano and Bösendorfer, one of the world’s finest piano manufacturers.

Hailed by BBC Magazine for his “formidable technique and playing of emotional depth,” the award-winning virtuoso invites all music lovers to join him for a program of short pieces, followed by stories about his life performing on the concert stage, teaching at the prestigious piano department at the Vienna School of Music and serving as Artistic Director of the International Beethoven Piano Competition Vienna.

“I look forward to returning to the United States, this time getting to share with my audiences my love for Vienna, the City of Music,” said Mr. Jiracek. “I plan to present piano works that are especially close to my heart.”

“When it comes to classical music, there is simply no other city quite like Vienna,” he added. “To me, it seems like it is alive with the sound of music. And there are references to the great classical composers at almost every corner, which I find extremely inspiring.”

His instrument of choice for the evening will be the legendary Bosendorfer grand piano. “I am impressed by the new Bösendorfer pianos,” he says. “Each instrument carries in itself the memory of a wonderful Viennese music tradition and is particularly responsive to my ideas as an artist.”

Born to a musical family in Hanover, Germany, Jiracek von Arnim has achieved numerous career milestones. Following his debut at age 11, he has performed throughout the world with many of the world’s top ensembles, including the Berlin and St. Petersburg Philharmonics, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and the Northern Sinfonia of England. He has served on juries for many major competitions, including the London International Competition, the Lev Vlassenko Competition Brisbane, the International Edvard Grieg Piano Competition and many others, and is currently Artistic Director and Jury Chairman of the International Beethoven Piano Competition Vienna.

Jiracek von Arnim’s ascension as an artist inspired widespread acclaim and an especially heartfelt appreciation from Van Cliburn, who noted “the marvelous Jan Jiracek von Arnim thrilled the world so greatly when we first heard him and he is continuing his brilliant career both in the United States and abroad.”

A distinguished pedagogue, Jiracek von Arnim is the University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna’s youngest-ever tenured professor. He is also an Honorary Professor at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. He conducts frequent lecture concerts at the Vienna Musikverein on the great composers and delivers talks on a variety of musical topics throughout the world.

Ruggero Piano is located at 4720 Hargrove Road, #120 in Raleigh. To RSVP for “A Night in Vienna” or to learn more about this unique event, please contact [Ruggero Piano at [919-839-2040]. For more information about Jan Jiracek von Arnim, please visit https://www.jjpianist.com/#vita

The final event of the NC Bach Festival Year ONE season!

Young Artists Concerto & Aria Competition – Florence Peacock Awards Winners Concert with our final Featured Artists and The NC Bach Festival Ensemble will conclude this year’s festival on a truly celebratory note. We will present the winners of the inaugural year of our newly developed competition aimed at young artists playing and singing music by Johann Sebastian Bach, his family, and contemporaries. For more information about the competition, please visit – http://www.ncbachfestival.org/concerto-aria-competition.html.

This most anticipated concert of our new existence will open with the appearance of two excellent pianists – our very own Elena Nezhdanova and her mentor and friend Ida Tili-Trebicka from Syracuse University in New York. Their performance is not only the manifestation of excellence and unique musicianship but also the real reflection of NC Bach Festival’s mission of sharing and inspiring young generations when the former student and the teacher meet on one stage to share their love for piano and music by sharing with us the magnificent Concerto for Two Pianos in C Major, BWV 1061 by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The afternoon will also include a formal award ceremony and a festive reception at which we will acknowledge our patron, all participants, judges, and all NC Bach Festival 2019 featured artists.

This event, as many others are free, but we need your help and support in form of any kind of contribution. All proceeds go to benefit our excellent Youth Programs.

Jeffrey Multer (violin), Julian Schwarz (cello), and Marika Bournaki (piano) have banded together in a new year-round artistic venture – The Mile-End Trio. The three are familiar faces at Eastern Music Festival each summer.
Multer, who is recognized worldwide for his passionate performances, depth of musical understanding and technique, is head of EMF’s violin faculty and is beginning his 21st season as EMF’s concert master. Jeff serves as concertmaster of the Florida Orchestra and performs frequently with orchestras and chamber ensembles around the globe.
Schwarz, who was born to a multigenerational musical family and is the son of EMF’s Music Director Gerard Schwarz, won first prize at the 2016 Boulder International Chamber Music Competition’s “The art of Duo” with Canadian pianist Marika Bournaki. 2018 will mark his sixth season with EMF. Julian is newly-appointed to the faculty of the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music and he maintains a very busy concert and teaching calendar.
Bournaki, well known as a world-class performer and a brilliant pianist, has appeared as guest soloist with symphonies across the globe. The award-winning documentary I am not a rock star features Bournaki’s evolution as an artist from the age of 12 to 20. Bournaki is looking forward to her third season with EMF in 2018.
The Mile-End Trio’s name is simple – this trio was rehearsing in Bournaki’s native Montreal Canada in the colorful and charming Mile-End neighborhood. Thus, their moniker. Hailed as “richly satisfying” by Classical Voices of North Carolina, The Mile-End Trio made their EMF debut in July 2017.

The mutual artistic and personal agreement, and the success of their collaboration meant the beginning of the newly established ensemble. It is the mission of the Duo to honor and to sustain the great tradition of the outstanding performing heritage of their homelands.

He is teaching, composing, and performing as a soloist, a chamber musician with his newly established piano and cello duo with pianist Elena Nezhdanova.
Born into a musical family in Kazan, Russia, Elena Nezhdanova made a debut with an orchestra at the age of eight and is a recipient of several prizes and awards. Since finishing her Doctorate in Piano Performance and Collaborative Arts from UNC Greensboro, she continues professional activities in United States and abroad. In October 2015, Elena performed Peter Tchaikovsky’s 1st piano concerto in B-flat minor with Sichuan Symphony Orchestra in Chengdu, China. Her recent solo appearances include an invitation to participate in the Lives of the Piano concert series in the program “The Piano and Claude Debussy: Celebrating the Centennial of His Death,” held at Manhattan School of Music on February 8th, 2018. Her future projects include solo appearances in Prague, Czech Republic, and Dresden, Germany in Summer 2018.

A dedicated pedagogue, Dr. Nezhdanova’s many years of interest in and research on the physiology of piano playing gave her the opportunity of being commissioned to write a review of Irina Gorin’s piano method, “Tales of a Musical Journey” published by the Clavier Companion magazine in November 2017. Among her many pedagogic activities, Elena served as a vice-president of MTNA collegiate chapter at UNCG, presented at the Greensboro Music Teachers Association, and at the NCMTA conference at Meredith College. Bonnie Thron joined the North Carolina Symphony as principal cellist in 2000. She currently is a member of the piano quartet Quercus and frequently plays with the Mallarmé Chamber Players. In the summers, she performs at the Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival in Maine.
Previously she was a member of the Peabody Trio, in residence at the Peabody Institute, during which time the group won the Naumberg chamber music competition. Early in her career, Thron was assistant principal cellist of the Denver Symphony for a season, and played and recorded with the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble. She has had a long history with the Apple Hill Chamber Players, as a guest artist and chamber music coach, and was involved in the group’s first Playing for Peace tour to the Middle East in 1991.
Thron has performed concertos with the North Carolina Symphony, the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, the Juilliard Orchestra, the Panama National Orchestra, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and various other orchestras in North Carolina and her original home state of New Hampshire. She received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School. Her teachers include Lynn Harrell, Harvey Shapiro, Norman Fischer, and Elsa Hilger.
Thron also received a BSN from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and worked as a nurse for several years, at Johns Hopkins Hospital and as a case manager in home care nursing, during which time she was a cello teacher at the Baltimore School for the Arts. Thron and her husband, clarinetist Fred Jacobowitz, have a son—pianist, clarinetist, and computer whiz Louis.
Fred Jacobowitz is a graduate of the famous New York City High School of Performing Arts (featured in the movie “Fame”). He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Julliard School, where he studied with the late Leon Russianoff. Later, he pursued doctoral studies at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where he studied with Loren Kitt. He likes to joke that he got his Clarinet degrees from Julliard and his Sax and Flute degrees from the famous ‘School of Hard Knocks’.
Fred made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall (now Weill Hall) as winner of the Artists International Competition. He was a featured soloist on radio stations WBAI and WQXR in New York City, with the Goldman Band, and in recital throughout the Metropolitan New York area. In addition, he played in and soloed with (and even conducted) the Kingsborough College (Brooklyn, NC) symphonic band. As a chamber musician, he has participated in the Marlboro Music Festival and played in the Verrazano Winds Woodwind Quintet in Brooklyn, New York. Other chamber music projects include the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music (Keene, NH) and most recently Washington Musica Viva in Tacoma Park, Maryland.
Mr. Jacobowitz was Principle Clarinetist in the Annapolis (Maryland) Symphony Orchestra from 1989-2002. While living in Baltimore, he also taught clarinet and saxophone at Peabody’s Preparatory Division. He is equally at home in the worlds of Classical, Jazz and Folk, having performed and recorded with his Kol Haruach Klezmer Band and his duo, Ebony and Ivory. Other records include 2 CDs with the Machaya Klezmer Band in Maryland. He has even played in a South Serbian Gypsy Band. He has performed as recitalist and soloist throughout the US, Canada, and Panama.
Fred now resides in Raleigh, NC, where (when not performing out of town) he is a machinist. He teaches woodwinds and freelances, and he can often be heard playing concerts with his wife, North Carolina Symphony Principal Cellist, Bonnie Thron. In addition, he performs as half of the Jacobowitz-Larkin duo with pianist Anatoly Larkin. He runs his own business, Case Closed, fixing musical instrument cases and is a professional Little League Baseball Umpire.
Born in 1979, Russia, Anatoly Larkin has been studying and making music from around the age of 4. After studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in UK, Anatoly completed his doctoral studies in Piano Performance at the University of Minnesota under the advice of Alexander Braginsky. In Minnesota, he was a member of the new-music ensemble, Zeitgeist, fulfilling his passion for contemporary and avant-garde music. With Zeitgeist, Anatoly had premiered works by Paul Dresher, Scott Miller, Amy Wurtz, Jerome Kitzke, Bill Banfield, Anthony Gatto, Kathy Jackanich, Justin Rubin, Michael Wittgraf and many others. He continues to be an active improviser, having collaborated with trombonist Patrick Crossland, clarinetist Pat O’Keefe, violinist Yuri Merzhevsky and other artists.
In 2005, he moved to Raleigh, NC, to join Zenph, a music technology company. There he developed a software/manual process, subsequently trademarked as Re-Performance®, that made it possible to hear performances of golden age pianists in famous audio recordings (such as those on wax cylinders, or from 78s) live again, with the help of state-of-the-art reproducing piano technology. He oversaw the recordings of critically acclaimed albums such as, for example, “Bach: The Goldberg Variations 1955 Performance”, “Rachmaninoff Plays Rachmaninoff” or “Oscar Peterson: Unmistakable”. He also oversaw the use of this technology in collaborations with live artists, like violinist Joshua Bell and HK Philharmonic. Currently, he is involved in creating Re-Performances of “Steinway Immortals” for Steinway and Sons in New York.
Anatoly continues to perform, teach, and, occasionally, compose music. In his teaching studio, he employs the successful ear-training methods of his first music teacher, Nadezhda Matsayeva. He also teaches music courses at the North Carolina State University. His recent projects include a presentation of piano works by “Russian Composers In Their Early 30s” (featured as a radio special on “The Classical Station”, 89.7FM), piano recordings with piano technician Marc Wienert, chamber performances with musicians Jonathan Kramer, Fred Jacobowitz, Alex Gorodezky and various members of NC Symphony Orchestra, as well as the continuing collaboration with living composers, including John Starosta and Craig Bove.

Presto was founded in 2007 in San Diego. The club was started to offer amateur pianists an outlet for performance. The club meets once a month at members’ homes. When one of the founders moved to Carrboro in 2011, a second section was created for the Chapel Hill/Durham area and then expanded to a third section for the Raleigh/Cary area in 2015. Presto’s mission is to bring serious pianists together to share classical piano music through performance and to inspire growth and instill confidence in all participants. Presto also organizes and develops musical opportunities for the group such as piano master classes, social gatherings, recitals, and workshops. The group offers a nurturing environment to its members, honoring each at their particular performance level. Presto promotes a lifelong study and enjoyment of piano performance. New members join by referral. Please contact any of the performers at the concert if you’d like to join or learn more about Presto. http://www.prestopiano.org/index.htm

Program Notes

Mozart: Sonata KV 570 in B-flat Major

Mozart’s Sonata K570 is a late work which shows the composer at his absolute best. The opening movement is unusual: each theme serves as a springboard to the next one. Thus, the opening melody is a counterpoint to the second one, and the second transfigures to become the third one. In fact, the contrapuntal mastery must have been so appealing that soon after Mozart’s death the Sonata was reworked for violin and piano by an admirer, and is still sometimes performed in that manner, ostensibly as an authentic Mozart piece.

The second movement is an extensive rondo, drawing on the wealth of vocal and instrumental traditions, almost ready to be orchestrated. The frequent use of strophic variation allows the performer to introduce a variety of ornaments, something which was expected in both vocal and instrumental performances of the time.

The last movement is yet another, very much abbreviated rondo; in its center lives a pecking bird, engulfed by contrapuntal lines, very reminiscent of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 and violin sonata K. 378. In both cases, the tempo suddenly accelerates for the sake of that very bird, and I have taken the brazen liberty of doing the same.

Beethoven: Sonata Op. 28 in D Major

The so-called “Pastoral” Sonata owes its nickname to a publisher. This is, without a doubt, inspired by the ostinato in the left hand, prominent in movements one and four, clear stand-in for bagpipes. Yet, while as certain pastoral feeling cannot be denied, it by no means shapes the entire work. In his second and last D Major sonata, Beethoven chooses yet again to keep all four movements in the home key, with the second, slow movement, taking the minor mode. But the contrast between major and minor in our sonata is much less violent then in the earlier Op. 10 No. 3. A possible musical twin for the work is rather the “Spring” sonata for violin and piano, written at about the same time; undeniably handsome, tender, poignant, and positive, with a dash of humor.

Schumann: Kreisleriana Op. 16

Every December, our country falls under the spell of the German author E. T. A. Hoffmann. In fact, we eagerly await the experience of seeing a most garbled version of his short novel “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” now in the form of a famous ballet. Hoffmann, a near-contemporary of Schumann and his undeniable alter ego, had a double career as an author and a musician (Schumann’s stated aspiration as well); his views, aesthetics, and artistic goals were also very close to Schumann’s. And just like Schumann with his Florestan and Eusebius, the fiery and the meek aspects of oneself, Hoffmann had invented for himself a literary stand-in, a certain Kapellmeister Kreisler, is whose bizarre personality these aspects are fused in a strange way, compelling in the eyes of some, repulsive for most others. Such split personality is more than a child of an erratic mind, sophisticated one moment and childish the next; here, we also have the inability, and the unwillingness to put up with the world the way we see it. Kreisler’s life, inasmuch as Hoffmann’s or Schumann’s, is a struggle against a mounting tide of mediocrity, indifference, and pointless small talk. Ironically, Hoffmann tells us, Kreisler’s unpublished autobiography became scrap paper for a memoir by… a cat. Schumann’s eight scenes are not, apparently, descriptive of specific Hoffmann moments; they describe mental states.

Program Notes

Welcome to the Great Hall of Camelot Dorothy Lewis-Griffith invites you to go on a magical, musical journey in time. Should you wish to go, her original compositions will transport you back to the Dark Ages. Merlin (THE Merlin) has found five twenty-first-century kids who he thinks, or hopes, are the ones to fulfill a prophecy and save the future. They can do so by saving the life of a young lad—and future great wizard—threatened by an evil shamaness. You will accompany these time travelers to the kingdom of Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. You will meet Arthur, Guinevere, Sir Launcelot, and the very evil shamaness, among others. Most of all, however, you will meet the greatest wizard of myth or history, Merlin.

Inspired by a series of novels, Stars in the Future Skies by Ed Lewis, depicting an epic struggle in the Dark Ages, Lewis-Griffith draws on historical references—Gregorian chants, medieval celebratory music, the Mass for the Dead, as well as more contemporary themes—to create musical pictures to carry us and our imaginations to a time and place far away, shrouded in the murky mists of the past.

You will hear the darkness of assassinations and mortal combat, march with Knights of the Round Table into the Great Hall of Camelot, explore the ferocity and personality of the greatest yet flawed knight, Sir Launcelot, feel the struggles of the boys as they serve as squires to the knights who quest and find, the Holy Grail. You will sink to the bottom of the sea in one of Merlin’s educational interventions to form a mystical, learning friendship with a community of highly sensitive mermaids.

Join us for a remarkable, original musical odyssey, journeys of growth and change, adventures as violent as a Dark Age joust, as lofty as the noble goals of chivalry, as lowly as murder, as magic as the Holy Grail. Go with these kids as they grow in self-awareness, mature into knighthood, and more. All this, in the musical compositions of Dorothy Lewis-Griffith.

Ian Kayser is a local artist, teacher, and traveling musician. Having been raised around all forms of art such as painting, literature, and music, he founded “Musicolor Studios” to provide an environment where the focus is on creativity. Ian also teaches for School of Rock where he helps students share the joys of music within a band. Inspired by Ruggero Piano, Ian has also taken up the craft of piano tuning and regulation, studying the art with fellow Piano Technicians Guild members for the past two years. He also is a sound technician at the Holly Springs Cultural Center where he gets to meet and run sound for all sorts of musical acts, many of which have become good friends. Ian also plays at a variety of venues with a variety of bands. One day it’s 70’s hits in Wilmington, the next is indie rock at Carrboro Music Festival, or maybe jazz jams at the Niche Wine Lounge, all to return Sunday morning for worship where the purpose of music is most true. For this event, Ian will be showcasing a year-long study highlighting the music of his favorite classical composer – Claude Debussy. The project included learning some of his more prominent pieces, annotating a biography (“Painter in Sound” by Stephan Walsh), writing an essay titled “Composing with Colors”, and composing a piece inspired by the ideas he’s learned from this undertaking. He hopes you will enjoy the performance just as much as he has enjoyed learning about this very important artist and his influence on the world of music!
